Tensile Fabric Structures Abu Dhabi

In Abu Dhabi, the main attraction of tensile fabric over a conventional roof is the combination of long, open spans, low weight and soft natural light. A single membrane can cover a large plaza, car park or courtyard with only a few masts, which keeps the space beneath free for people and vehicles. Less structure means smaller foundations and a quicker build, which matters on busy sites. The membrane reflects much of the sun's heat, and the curved forms suit the capital's contemporary architecture, from cultural sites on Saadiyat to public spaces along the Corniche. We design each structure for its site, exposure and purpose.

Abu Dhabi's coastal and island sites can be exposed to strong sea breezes, and our tensile structures are engineered for exactly that. Each design is calculated to the wind speeds required by Abu Dhabi's codes for its location, with the membrane shape, cables, masts and foundations sized accordingly. A double-curved, correctly tensioned membrane is very efficient at resisting wind, because load spreads evenly through the fabric into the cables. Sites on Yas, Saadiyat and Al Reem Islands, or on the Corniche, get particular attention to wind exposure and to marine-grade fittings that resist salt. Periodic inspection of tension and fixings keeps the structure performing safely.

Membrane life in Abu Dhabi depends mainly on the material chosen. PTFE-coated glass fabric, used for premium permanent structures, can last more than 25 years, stays bright and is largely self-cleaning in rain. PVDF-coated PVC, the most widely used membrane for commercial canopies, car parks and schools, typically lasts 15-20 years, and HDPE shade fabric around 8-12 years. Near the coast, humidity and salt make regular rinsing worthwhile, and keeping the membrane correctly tensioned stops it flapping and wearing. When the membrane eventually needs replacing, the steel structure can usually be kept and a new membrane fitted.

Illumination is one of the great strengths of tensile fabric. Lit from below, the translucent membrane glows, making it a striking night-time feature, and it can also take LED projection. In Abu Dhabi, lit canopies are used at hotels, cultural venues, retail entrances and public spaces, where they add presence after dark and make the space usable through the cooler evenings. Colour-changing LEDs can match national occasions, events or brand colours. We plan the lighting with the structural design, so fittings and cables are concealed within the masts and edge cables, and we can coordinate with the project's lighting designer.
