Which fabric should I choose for a tensile shade — HDPE, PVC, or PTFE?
Match the fabric to what the shade has to do. Knitted HDPE shade cloth is a breathable mesh: it blocks roughly 85–95% of UV depending on the grade and knit density, lets heat escape upward and wind pass through, costs the least, and is the right choice where the aim is cooler air under the shade — car parks, play areas, school courtyards, sports facilities. PVDF-coated PVC membrane is a solid, waterproof fabric that blocks around 98% of UV and keeps rain out as well as sun; it is the standard for architectural sail shades, walkways, dining terraces and anywhere the space beneath must stay dry, and it comes in a wide colour range. PTFE-coated glass fibre is the premium long-life membrane for large architectural spans and landmark canopies: it is self-cleaning, non-combustible and lasts the longest, at the highest cost. A pool deck, a playground and a car park each have different priorities, and we recommend the fabric for the use rather than the other way round.
Are your tensile shade structures compliant with UAE municipality standards?
Yes. Every tensile structure we build is engineered in-house rather than bought as a kit: our engineers calculate the wind loads for the site, size the steel, the cables and the membrane accordingly, and produce the structural calculations and drawings to British and American design standards. Where a project needs municipal approval — and most public, commercial and larger residential structures do — those calculations and drawings are prepared in the format the authority requires, for Dubai Municipality, Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport, Sharjah Municipality and the other emirates, and we handle the submission with you. The approval stage typically takes 2–4 weeks and is started first, because it is the one step in the programme we cannot compress. The same engineering is what lets us stand behind the warranty: a shade that has been designed for its wind exposure is the one that is still tensioned and intact after the summer storms.
What sizes of tensile shade structures do you build?
There is no fixed size limit for a properly engineered tensile structure, and our projects show the range. At the small end we build single-post sail shades over a villa pool deck or a garden seating area. In the middle are the multi-post canopies that cover school playgrounds, mosque courtyards, walkways and car parks. At the large end we have delivered canopies over cycle tracks, hotel event plazas and sports facilities, where a series of masts and membranes cover a space the size of a pitch. What changes with scale is not whether it can be done but how it is engineered: longer spans need taller masts, larger cable sizes and deeper foundations, and above a certain span PTFE membrane starts to make more sense than PVC. Span and height are worked out for each site from the area to be covered, the clearance needed beneath and the wind exposure, and the site survey is where that starts.
How long do tensile and sail shades last in Dubai weather?
Long enough that the fabric choice, not the climate, sets the life. Knitted HDPE shade cloth of a good grade lasts many years in UAE sun before it loses tension and colour; PVDF-coated PVC membranes last longer, because the PVDF topcoat resists the UV degradation and staining that shorten the life of plain PVC; and PTFE-coated glass fibre lasts the longest of all and is chosen for structures expected to stand for decades. The galvanised steel masts and stainless fittings outlast any of the fabrics, so re-covering a structure with a new membrane after its first life is normal and far cheaper than replacing it. Three things shorten the life of any fabric: under-tensioning, which lets it flap and abrade; letting sand and dust sit on it, which is why we recommend cleaning two or three times a year; and a design that was never right for the site's wind. We specify materials with proven durability in the local climate and engineer for the site so the shade reaches the life it should.
Are tensile shades suitable for both residential and commercial projects?
Yes — the same engineering scales from a villa garden to a public plaza, and the fabric and structure are adapted to each. For residential work that means sail shades over pool decks and lawns, canopies over driveways and outdoor dining areas, and shapes and colours chosen to sit with the house; the structures are compact, the columns are kept out of the way and the fabric is chosen for appearance as much as shade. For commercial, institutional and public projects it means larger spans and higher clearances — school playgrounds, mosque courtyards, hotel and resort pools and event areas, walkways between buildings, car parks, sports facilities — with municipality approvals, fabrics chosen for longevity and low maintenance, and installation phased around a site that stays in use. Residential communities and developers sit between the two, with repeated structures across many plots. The process is the same in every case: a site survey, an engineered design for your approval, fabrication in Sharjah and installation by our own crews.
Can tensile shades provide rain protection as well as sun protection?
Yes, if the fabric and the shape are chosen for it. PVDF-coated PVC and PTFE membranes are solid, waterproof fabrics, so a canopy made from them keeps rain out as well as sun; the design then has to manage where the water goes, which is a matter of shape rather than material. A properly tensioned membrane is curved in two directions — a hypar, a cone or a barrel — so rain runs off its low points, and those low points are placed where the run-off can be collected by a gutter or discharged clear of walkways and seating rather than sheeting off an edge onto the people beneath. Ponding, where water collects in a flat area of fabric, is a design fault and a load risk, and it is what tensioning and shaping prevent. Knitted HDPE shade cloth is not waterproof: it breaks up rain into a fine drizzle and lets it through, which is fine for a car park or a play area and is why HDPE is the cooler, cheaper choice where sun control is the only requirement.
