Compared with a conventional roof, a tensile fabric structure is far lighter, lets soft, diffused daylight through and can cover very large areas with only a few support columns. That combination is why Dubai uses tensile membranes for everything from school playgrounds in Al Barsha and Mirdif to landmark canopies in Downtown and Business Bay. Less steel and smaller foundations usually mean a faster build and a lower structural cost for large spans. The membrane reflects much of the sun's heat, so the space beneath stays cooler, and the curved shapes give an architectural character that a flat roof cannot. Every tensile structure we build in Dubai is designed to the Dubai wind codes for its exact location, with the membrane shape, cable sizes, masts and foundations calculated from the site's design wind speed. Exposure varies across the city, from sheltered courtyards in Jumeirah to open waterfronts at Dubai Marina and high rooftops in DIFC, so we never use a single standard design. Correct tension is essential: a taut, double-curved membrane sheds wind loads efficiently, while a slack one flaps and wears. We check tension at handover and recommend periodic inspections, especially after the summer shamal winds.

It depends on the membrane. High-quality PTFE-coated glass fabric, the premium material we use for permanent landmark structures, can last more than 25 years in Dubai's climate, staying bright and cleaning itself well in rain. PVDF-coated PVC, the most common choice for car parks, schools and commercial canopies, typically lasts 15-20 years, and knitted HDPE shade fabric around 8-12 years. Real lifespan also depends on tension and care: a membrane kept taut and rinsed of dust from time to time lasts far longer than one left slack and dirty. When a membrane does reach the end of its life, the steel structure can usually be reused with a new membrane.

Yes. Because tensile fabric is translucent, it glows when lit from below, which makes it ideal for dramatic up-lighting and LED projection at night. In Dubai, lit tensile canopies are used at hotel entrances, restaurant terraces, retail forecourts and public spaces to create a landmark after dark. Colour-changing LED fittings can match the lighting to events or brand colours, and projection can put graphics onto the membrane surface. We plan lighting positions at the design stage, so fittings and cables are concealed in the masts and structure rather than added afterwards. Lighting also makes the space usable in the evenings, when most outdoor activity in Dubai happens.
