Tensile Fabric Structures Umm Al Quwain

A tensile fabric structure is far lighter than a conventional roof, lets soft daylight through and covers large areas with few columns. Umm Al Quwain's lagoon and coastal sites are exposed to steady sea breezes, and our tensile structures are engineered for them. Each design is calculated to the wind requirements of UAQ's authorities for its specific site, with membrane shape, cables, masts and foundations sized for the exposure. A correctly tensioned, double-curved membrane is very stable, because the load spreads evenly across the fabric. Near the water we use galvanised steel and stainless fittings to resist salt, and we check the ground carefully, because some coastal land is sandy and may need deeper foundations. Periodic inspections keep the structure performing safely.

How long a membrane lasts in UAQ depends mainly on the fabric. PTFE-coated glass fabric can last more than 25 years, PVDF-coated PVC typically 15-20 years and HDPE shade fabric around 8-12 years. PVDF-coated PVC is the most common choice for UAQ's commercial and community projects, because it is waterproof, keeps its colour and is easy to clean. Near the lagoon, rinsing salt off the membrane from time to time helps it reach its full life, and keeping it taut prevents wear from flapping. When replacement is needed, the steel structure can usually be kept and fitted with a new membrane.

Tensile canopies can be lit to spectacular effect: the translucent fabric glows when lit from below, and it can also take LED projection. In Umm Al Quwain, lit canopies suit lagoon-side leisure areas, restaurant terraces, mosque courtyards and community spaces, making them attractive and usable on cool evenings by the water. Warm white lighting gives an elegant, relaxed feel, and colour-changing LEDs can be used for events and national celebrations.
