Standard commercial sails are made from porous HDPE, which blocks sun and UV but lets rain through, and in RAK's windy conditions its open knit also lets some wind pass, reducing the load on the structure. For businesses that need rain protection, such as resort restaurants at Al Hamra and Al Marjan Island, we make 100% waterproof PVC sails, engineered for the higher wind load a solid fabric carries. Waterproof sails are pitched so water runs off. Many resorts use breathable HDPE over pool decks and waterproof PVC over dining areas.

Single sails covering hundreds of square metres are possible, built with commercial-grade edge webbing and heavy perimeter cables. In Ras Al Khaimah, sizing masts, cables and footings from site-specific wind-load calculations is essential, because the emirate sees stronger seasonal winds than most, particularly on the coast and in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. For large areas, several overlapping sails are usually a better solution than one very large sail: they spread the wind load, can be tensioned individually and are easier to maintain. We also recommend periodic inspections of tension and fixings, ideally after the windy season, which we can carry out on our scheduled RAK visits.

RAK businesses can have their logo screen-printed or applied as vinyl graphics on PVC sails, which makes a strong statement at resort pool decks, beach clubs, restaurants and showrooms. HDPE sails can carry branding on attached panels or valances. We match fabric colours to the brand palette, provide a proof before production and use UV-stable inks. For resorts, coordinated branded sails across the pool, beach and dining areas help tie the outdoor spaces together visually. For events and seasonal promotions, printed panels can be designed to be swapped without replacing the whole sail, so the same structure serves many campaigns over its life.

On existing concrete, we fix masts with chemical anchors or engineered spread-footing base plates, which avoids major excavation. In RAK, where wind loads are higher, we check the slab especially carefully, including its thickness, reinforcement and condition, because the fixing must resist strong uplift and overturning forces from the tensioned sail. On pool decks and terraces, we also protect the waterproofing and finishes. Where the slab cannot carry the loads, we design a new footing or fix to a structural column or wall. On rocky ground near the mountains, rock anchors may be used instead.
